Power surges are unpredictable, and are caused by various phenomena such as supply faults by service suppliers, faulty appliances, drains and lots of others. With electrical systems becoming even more complex, a very small power surge can cause big problems in these systems resulting in irreparable damage.

Frequently electricity surges are a result of an interruption in the flow of electricity, then established directing or again power back in the infrastructure, like by lightning. Though we attribute lightning as the primary cause of the majority of power strikes, it only accounts for approximately 2% of those instances. How a surge protector works

The live cable or main power line in a surge protector includes an extra linked connection that feeds to a ground wire. An earth cable’s purpose would be to direct any extra current safely to the ground. The surge connection from the shield stays inactive until a bigger than normal voltage appears. This excess current is then safely diverted through the extra earth wire, directly into the ground. This prevents more current than ordinary from flowing into your appliances effectively making sure that they are protected from any injury which can be caused by power surges.
